Despite the fact that our team as a whole has done a very good job, I feel there are quite a few areas that I need to improve on and I’ve summarized them as follows.

First and foremost, I could have been more energetic when presenting. After watching the video recording, I realized that the graph of our presentation’s energy level was like a parabola and my part, was just at the bottom of it. My lack of energy badly affected the impressiveness and coherence of the whole presentation, and hence affected the performance of our team.
Second, I could have been more confident. Unlike my teammates, I seemed to have been even more nervous this time compared to OP1. Because of this, I failed to project my voice well, referred to the computer screen too often, and moreover forgot what I should say at some points. So in the end, I’m afraid that I kind of lost my audience’s attention.
Last but not least, I could have implemented more techniques learnt from this course. Failure of doing so is actually one of the major reasons of having previous two problems. For example, if I had added a few humor and attention-grabbing elements in my slides and speech, at the least the atmosphere would have been different; it would not have been so monotonous, and it would be likely that the audience would have been more interested.
To solve these three problems, it is always a very good practice to rehearse even more, amend the script and slides constantly, gather experience by presenting more, and reflect sincerely after each presentation. By doing so, I believe I will be able to do better over time.

Dear Shiyan,
ReplyDeleteAs seen from my friends comments and evident in our video, I truly agree that our group's energy is like a parabola that Prof Leung(MATHS lecturer) thought us.
However, to be able to get a horizontally straight line graph(also taught by Prof Leung), I believe that all of us must do our part to make each part's interesting.
This comes in a form of humor, interesting presentation and also creative visual aids like other groups are showcasing. It would be good if you view the other group's videoclips.
However, I wish to comment that you have the potential to become a good lecturer like Prof Leung as you possess the 7C especially clarity. I have no problem understanding your words.
It's just that you have to be energetic. Hopefully that will actually make u be a lecturer one day.
Regards,
Ferrino
Hi Shiyan,
ReplyDeleteIt is a very good reflection, I think, because you did show to us your weaknesses, one by one. However, It is not complete as you did not realize your strength. I think that I could not have done better than you did. The demonstration of the guidebook, which you had been put in charge of, was a very hard part. I could not think of any humor or attention-grabbing element to add. In addition, you had to provide audience with enough information of the guidebook in only 4 minutes.
I think that the lack of energy in our presentation began with me when i failed to keep the flow from Eno. That ruined the rest of the presentation.
Anyways, you have the potential to become a good lecture, as Eno said.
Cheers,
Dam Tuan Long
Dear Shiyan,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, our “super complex” method of spinning a pen on the table to allocate parts for the presentation allocated you a pretty difficult part. As Dam Long has said, it is not easy to squeeze so much information into 4 minutes.
Also, you had some trouble with your notes during the presentation. I didn’t manage to get your laptop to exit sleep mode during my presentation, and so you had to improvise and come up with points on your own for the first few minutes.
It’s brave of you to list out so many of your mistakes here for everyone to see. However, I think the purpose of reflection not only to learn from our mistakes, but to also take note of things that we have done well and continue to do them.
During your presentation, you had several portions whereby you sounded really professional (tone is really good). I think this is the portions that you are more familiar with. It would be really great if you could emulate this throughout your speech.
In conclusion, I think that you didn’t do as badly as you made out in your reflection.
Regards,
Russell
Dear Ferrino, Long, Russell and Anuj,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your positive comments on my post, and of course for the encouragements and advises you have given. I will keep it up and try my best to improve my presentation skills later on.
It's a great pleasure to work with you guys.
Regards,
Shiyan
Dear ShiYan,
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have gone pretty rough on yourself for the presentation. Even though there were a few hiccups like you having to refer to your notes at a few occasions, I think your presentation was almost at par with that of the group. You must cut yourself some slack because your part was the toughest to present.
I think a little more practice would have helped you gain the confidence that you said you lacked. It would have also helped you in effectively using your body language, tone variations and facial expressions to substantiate your point.
In the end, the important thing is that the team as a whole did well. Everybody contributed. Even if we feel that we could not give our best, we must remember that this has taught us a lot of things that will help us in future presentations.
Nice working with you on the booklet. I respect the fact that you hold strong to your opinions, still keeping open arms for alternate views.
Have a good day,
Anuj
